August is National Wellness Month, making it a great time to focus on the small choices that can have a small impact on your overall health. Wellness is more than simply avoiding injury or illness. It is about taking care of your body, staying active, managing stress, getting enough rest, and building healthy habits that support your everyday life.
What is Wellness?
Wellness is a combination of physical, mental, and emotional health. While everyone’s wellness journey looks different, there are several areas that can make a difference in how you feel and function each day.
1. Keep Moving
Regular movement is one of the most important parts of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. You do not have to spend hours in the gym to stay active. Walking, stretching, playing a sport, riding a bike, or participating in recreational activities can all help keep your body moving.
Movement can also help improve strength, flexibility, balance, and endurance while reducing your risk of certain injuries.
If you spend most of your day sitting, try taking short movement breaks throughout the day. Even a few minutes of walking or stretching can be a great place to start.
2. Take Care of Your Body
Your body needs the right tools to perform at its best. Eating a balanced diet, drinking enough water, getting quality sleep, and staying physically active are all important parts of wellness.
It is also important to listen to your body. Persistent pain, stiffness, weakness, or difficulty completing activities should not always be ignored. Addressing these concerns early can help prevent a small problem from becoming a larger one.
3. Make Recovery a Priority
Rest and recovery are just as important as exercise. Whether you are an athlete, a weekend warrior, or simply trying to stay active, your body needs time to recover.
Recovery can include proper sleep, stretching, mobility exercises, rest days, and other strategies that help your body prepare for your next activity.
Physical therapy can also play an important role in recovery by helping individuals improve movement, rebuild strength, and safely return to the activities they enjoy.
4. Take Care of Your Mental Wellness
Wellness is not only physical. Stress, body schedules, and everyday responsibilities can take a toll on your mental health.
Make time for activities that help you relax and recharge. Spending time with family and friends, enjoying a hobby, getting outside, exercising, or simply taking a break can all be valuable parts of a healthy routine.
5. Setting Realistic Goals
You do not have to completely change your lifestyle overnight. Instead, focus on small, realistic improvements.
Try setting simple goals such as:
- Taking a daily walk
- Drinking more water
- Getting consistent sleep
- Stretching daily
Small changes can become lasting habits when you make them part of your daily routine.
Wellness Starts With Movement
At ARPC, we believe movement is an important part of living a healthy and active life. Whether you are recovering from an injury, returning to sports, dealing with pain, or simply looking to improve how you move, physical therapy can help you work toward your goals.
This National Wellness Month, take a moment to evaluate your healthy and ask yourself: What is one thing I can do today to take better care of myself?
Your wellness journey does not have to start with major change. Sometimes, it starts with simply taking the first step.
